Their online interface, free DNS, and telephone technical support are good despite the annoyance of sifting through lots of ads during purchases.
They do this because Godaddy is rumored to lose money on their domain name business because of the customer service overhead and marketing costs, but they make most of their money on add-on services such as hosting and privacy.
Privacy can come in handy for personal blogs and sites that want some anonymity, but search engines may rank commercial (customer-facing) sites lower when their business's addresses are hidden from customers.
If privacy is important, a better deal is at 1and1.com where many domains are $7 for the first year, $9/yr thereafter, and all include optional privacy service for free.
